Back Rail for Picket Fencing

This back rail is a pressure treated, smooth planed fence rail designed for anyone building their own picket fence from scratch. Made by KDM, it provides the horizontal support needed to fix picket pales in place, giving your fence a strong and even structure from post to post.

Smooth planed on all faces, this back rail has no rough edges or splinters to deal with, making it pleasant to handle and quick to work with during installation. Being pressure treated, the timber is protected against rot and decay, so it's well suited to standing up to the British weather once it's fitted outdoors. A common question when planning a picket fence is what rail size to use behind the pales, and at 1830 x 70 x 30mm, this back rail is sized to suit most standard picket fence designs.

Sizing and specification

Each rail measures 1830mm (6ft) long, 70mm wide and 30mm thick, often described as a 3 x 1 rail. This length pairs well with standard fence post spacing, helping to minimise cutting and waste when planning a run of picket fencing.

Installation guidance

To build a picket fence, two back rails are typically fixed horizontally between fence posts, one near the top and one near the bottom, with picket pales then nailed or screwed onto the front face. For a complete picket fence, pair this back rail with smooth planed picket pales and apex capping rail for panels that also need a finished top edge.

Priced at £4.26 each, these rails are in stock now. Order online or visit our Worcestershire yard.
