Apex Capping Rail – For Feather Edge Fencing
An apex capping rail is the finishing touch for any feather edge fence, sitting along the top of the panel to protect the boards beneath from rain and standing water. Each apex capping rail measures 1828 x 44 x 16mm, sized to run the full length of a standard feather edge fence panel bay.
Our apex capping rail is available in two finishes: Tanalised (green) for a traditional, freshly treated look, or Tanatone (brown) for a richer tone that blends well with darker garden schemes. Both finishes are pressure-treated, helping the timber resist rot and decay throughout its life outdoors.
Why fit a capping rail on feather edge fencing?
A common question we're asked is whether a capping rail is really necessary on feather edge fencing, and the answer is yes if you want to maximise the lifespan of your fence. Without an apex capping rail, rainwater can sit on the exposed top edges of the feather edge boards, leading to faster rot and splitting over time. Fitting a capping rail sheds water away from the boards and gives the whole fence a neater, more finished appearance.
Installation and sizing
Each apex capping rail is cut to 1828mm, matching the standard feather edge panel length, so one rail typically covers one bay. Simply nail or screw the rail along the top edge of the panel, ensuring it overlaps slightly to direct water away from the boards rather than pooling on the joints.
To complete your feather edge fence, you may also want to look at our fence rails and notched birdmouth posts, both designed to work alongside the apex capping rail as part of a complete fencing framework.
Priced at £3.54 each, our apex capping rail is in stock now in both Tanalised and Tanatone finishes. Order online or visit our Worcestershire yard.
