An estimated 20,000 people enjoyed the fun and festivities at this year’s hugely successful Worcester Show, held on Sunday 13 August. Held once again at Pitchcroft, the home of Worcester Racecourse, the show put smiles on thousands of faces as people of all ages enjoyed the packed programme of live music, market stalls, fun fair rides, dog show, sports competitions in The Village Games, and plenty of food and drink.
Worcester Timber Products were proud, once again, to support the show with timber for use around the site, including directional signs, but also our famous Holberrow Potting Shed, painted in OSMO Country Colour – Cement Grey. The potting shed was used as a base for local Podcast DJs, The Bearded Growers. On the day, Bish and JJ said: “Come and Join us in the potting shed, courtesy of @worcester_timber_products – this incredible shed is 8×6 and discounted for todays @worcester_show ! Come and have a mooch!”
This year’s Show saw the debut of the Find It Do It marquee, offering a range of activities, entertainment and experiences, all curated by Worcester’s communities and giving a flavour of the different cultures in the city. The marquee was home to the Big Worcester Doodle, supported by Onside Advocacy and Timeout, to which more than 700 people contributed, creating a unique piece of community art showcasing the city. Local celebrity runner Donato got everyone keeping fit in the brand new Village Games area, where kids and grown-ups got to grips with traditional challenges like egg-and-spoon and the sack race.
The day’s competitions showcased a wide variety of talent, from baked goods and jams to handcrafted garments and artwork, not to mention an outstanding selection of fruit, flowers and vegetables from local gardeners. There were more than 660 entries for the varied classes. Prizes were presented by the Mayor of Worcester, Councillor Louis Stephen, who also officially opened the Show following a parade at the start of the day’s events.
The Worcester Mela was back with its own marquee hosting a riot of colour, bringing a flavour of South Asia to the Show with engaging workshops, family activities and a wealth of live artistic performances. The crowds also flocked to the great line-up on the music stage, which ranged from the pop ‘n’ roll three-party harmonies of The Secret Cabaret to the swinging fun of the Elgar School of Music’s Raglejazz and the flavour of the West End from the local Lollipop Youth Theatre.
This year’s Worcester Show was sponsored by Worcester BID, Worcester Timber Products, Southco, Worcester Rock School.
Ian Hilton-Turvey of the Friends of Worcester Show said: “Once again the Worcester Show was probably the best village show in a city! It was a spectacularly successful all-of-the-family day out, full of leisure, pleasure and creative discovery. People were still running up and down the new Village Games track long after the event was officially over!
“This was the first year that we had asked visitors for donations to support the cost of putting on this great event for all the family, and we’re all grateful for how positively people responded to this. Thank you to everyone who supported the Show in this way.
“The Volunteers and the City Council team pulled out all the stops to make the day a great experience for everyone, and I’m excited to say that we’re already drawing up plans for another fabulous Worcester Show in 2024!”
